ChorusOz Perth 2026 | Carmina Burana
Taking part in ChorusOz is a life-changing experience and one you will never forget.
ChorusOz was created in 2006 by Artistic & Music Director Brett Weymark to allow those who couldn’t commit to a regular choir the opportunity to sing once a year on a world-class stage. It has since become a fixture in the Sydney Opera House and Sydney Philharmonia Choirs’ calendar.
ChorusOz is an opportunity for singers of all levels to immerse themselves in a major choral work over a weekend, culminating in a performance of the music. In June 2026, ChorusOz will take place at the Sydney Opera House, performing highlights from Verdi’s grand opera Aida. Later in September ChorusOz returns to Perth to present Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana at Winthrop Hall with a star cast of soloists and the Perth Symphony Orchestra.

ABOUT CARMINA BURANA
Carl Orff’s kaleidoscopic Carmina Burana – one of the best-known choral extravaganzas of the 20th century. Based on a collection of medieval poems and profane songs, this thrilling work sings of the fickleness of fate and fortune, the circle of life and the earthy pleasures of wine, gambling and lust. The music drives through roaring rapids of primal ecstasy, dancing whirlpools and gentle pools of lullaby.
Orff began writing in 1935. He had come across Johann Andreas Schmeller’s 1847 edition of Carmina Burana: Cantiones profanae cantoribus et choris cantandae comitantibus instrumentis atque imaginibus magicis – to give its full Latin title. “Songs of Beuern: Secular songs for singers and choruses to be sung together with instruments and magical images” – for the rest of us. Orff chose 24 of the 11th, 12th and 13th century texts to create a libretto in Latin, Middle High German and Old French.
It was premiered on 8 June 1937 by Opera Frankfurt and was an instant hit. Sydney Philharmonia Choirs (or Hurlstone Choral Society as it was known then) performed in the Australian premiere with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Hans Schmidt-Issestedt on 16 August 1956 at the Sydney Town Hall.
This will be the Australian Premiere of the new ensemble version.
