Aïda is a tragic opera in four acts by Giuseppe Verdi to an Italian libretto by Antonio Ghislanzoni. It’s among the most popular and often performed operas around the world, with rousing choruses, soaring arias and that famous march. It premiered in 1871 in Cairo to great acclaim. Verdi himself did not attend and he was annoyed that the audience consisted of invited dignitaries, politicians and critics, but no members of the general public. He considered the 1872 production at La Scala, Milan (which he closely supervised) to be the real premiere.
Set at some non-determined time in ancient Egypt, the plot revolves the doomed forbidden love story of the Egyptian army commander Radamés, the King’s daughter Amneris (who loves him) and the enemy Ethiopian princess, Aïda (whom he loves). Love, jealously, betrayal… as with most operas, nothing ends well.
Verdi’s music is typically lyrical and rhythmical and easy to love. Watch a brief excerpt of Aïda HERE.
